This free A-Level Economics essay practice paper follows the style of AQA, Edexcel and OCR extended-writing questions. Question 1 is a context-based question on a supermarket merger with a data table (10 and 25 marks); Question 2 is a macroeconomics essay on supply-side policies and unemployment (15 and 25 marks); Question 3 is a 25-mark essay on taxation and income inequality. The answer version gives indicative content, diagram guidance and level descriptors for every part, written the way examiners write mark schemes.
- Question 135 marks · Mergers, economies of scale, market power, competition policyA proposed supermarket merger. Read Extract A and Table 1, then answer both parts. Extract A (hypothetical data): Valumart and Harlow's, the second- and fourth-largest grocery retailers in a national market worth £150 billion a year, have agreed to merge. The firms say that combining their buying, warehousing and delivery operations would cut the merged firm's costs by about £1 billion a year within three years, roughly 2 per cent of their combined costs, and they have promised to pass “a substantial share” of the savings on to shoppers. The competition authority's first-stage review found 60 local areas in which a Valumart store and a Harlow's store are each other's closest competitor. It also noted that the discount chain Budgetline has doubled its market share in ten years, and that suppliers, many of them small farms and food manufacturers, already complain that the largest grocers use their buying power to push down the prices they are paid. Table 1 shows market shares (per cent of grocery sales).(a)[10]With the help of a cost diagram, examine how the proposed merger could affect the average costs of the merged firm.(b)[25]Using Extract A, Table 1 and your own knowledge, evaluate whether the competition authority should allow the merger to go ahead.
- Question 240 marks · Supply-side policies, LRAS, types of unemployment, demand-side policySupply-side policies and unemployment. Over the past decade, several advanced economies have combined relatively low national unemployment rates with weak productivity growth. At the same time, unemployment has stayed persistently higher in regions where traditional industries such as manufacturing and mining have declined, and many employers report difficulty finding workers with the skills they need.(a)[15]Using an aggregate demand and aggregate supply diagram, explain how supply-side policies could increase an economy's long-run aggregate supply.(b)[25]Evaluate the view that supply-side policies are the most effective way to reduce unemployment.
- Question 325 marks · Income inequality, progressive taxation, redistributionIncome inequality and taxation. Evaluate the view that raising income tax rates on high earners is the most effective way for a government to reduce income inequality.

A-Level Economics Essay exam tips
- Plan before you write. For a 25-mark question, spend three or four minutes choosing two or three arguments on each side and the factor your final judgement will depend on. A few fully developed chains of reasoning (because, so, therefore) score higher than a long list of undeveloped points.
- Use the context in every paragraph. Quote a figure from the data (a market share, a change over ten years) or a detail from the extract and say what it means for your argument. Application appears in every level descriptor, so an answer that could have been written without reading the question cannot reach the top levels.
- Make diagrams do work. Label the axes, curves and equilibria, then refer to the diagram in your writing (“average cost falls from AC1 to AC2”). An unlabelled or unexplained diagram adds little; a well-used one supports several links in a chain of reasoning.
- Evaluate as you go, then conclude: weigh each argument (how large, how likely, over what time period, for whom) and finish with a judgement that answers the exact question and says what it depends on. Budget about 1.2 minutes per mark: 12 minutes for the 10-mark part, 18 for the 15-mark part and 30 for each 25-mark part.

Which exam board are these essay questions for?
They are board-neutral. AQA, Edexcel and OCR all assess A-Level Economics partly through extended written answers marked by levels, including high-tariff evaluative questions. The pairing of a 15-mark explain part with a 25-mark evaluate part follows the AQA essay format, while the 10-mark examine part and the standalone 25-mark essay are closer to Edexcel. The topics (mergers and competition policy, supply-side policies and unemployment, income inequality) are core content on the major specifications.
How are 25-mark A-Level Economics essays marked?
By levels, not by ticking points. AQA places the whole answer in one of five levels, with Level 5 (21 to 25 marks) requiring clear chains of reasoning, good use of the context and supported evaluation leading to a final judgement. Edexcel awards up to 16 marks for knowledge, application and analysis and up to 9 for evaluation. The mark scheme in this paper uses the five-level approach and notes the Edexcel split.
Does the PDF include the mark scheme?
There are two PDFs: a clean question paper for sitting under timed conditions, and a version with the mark scheme appended, with indicative content, diagram guidance, evaluation points and level descriptors for every part.
