This free IB Physics practice exam samples the 2023 syllabus core — space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; nuclear and quantum physics — in Paper 1A multiple-choice style, followed by two Paper 2-style structured questions on projectile motion and alpha decay. It targets where IB candidates lose marks: picking the wrong Doppler formula, factor-of-two slips in energy, unit conversions, and "explain" answers that restate the question. Every answer is worked with IB-style mark allocation so you can self-mark.

IB Physics exam tips
- Read the command term: "calculate" means show the substituted numbers and a unit; "determine" means reach a value from data you must combine; "explain" means give the physical reason ("because the net force is...") — restating the observation earns nothing.
- A numerical answer with no unit, or to 5 significant figures from 2-figure data, loses the final mark. Match the data: usually 2 or 3 significant figures.
- The data booklet gives the equations but not their meaning. Decide which quantity is the unknown, rearrange in symbols first, then substitute — and check kelvin versus Celsius and radians versus degrees before you press equals.
- In Paper 1A the options are usually built from the common slips: a missing square, a factor of 2, or the wrong sign. If your answer is not among them, recheck those three before anything else.

Frequently asked questions
Is this IB Physics practice exam really free?
Yes. The full exam and the print-ready PDF are free with no signup. The worked answer key is free too: enter your email on the page and we email you the answer-key PDF and unlock the solutions on screen. ExamTeX makes money from its exam generator, which turns your own class notes into practice exams like this one.
How closely does this match the real IB Physics exam?
As of 2026 (the 2023 syllabus, first examined in 2025), SL Paper 1 is 90 minutes: Paper 1A has 25 multiple-choice questions and Paper 1B has data-based questions; SL Paper 2 is 90 minutes of short-answer and extended-response questions. HL has 40 multiple-choice questions in a 2-hour Paper 1 and a 2.5-hour Paper 2. A calculator is allowed on every paper. This set uses the same question styles at roughly a third of the length, covering mostly the core shared by SL and HL (the torque, sound Doppler and photoelectric-effect questions use HL-only content).
Does the PDF include the answer key?
There are two PDFs: a clean exam paper for sitting under timed conditions, and an answer-key PDF with full worked solutions that we email to you.
Can I generate more IB Physics practice exams like this?
Yes. Upload your own notes, slides or a past paper to ExamTeX and it generates a print-ready practice exam in the same format in about a minute, with an answer key. The free tier includes 2 exams a month.
Can teachers use this exam in class?
