This free IB Chemistry practice exam follows the 2023 syllabus: Structure 1 to 3 (particles and moles, bonding, periodicity) and Reactivity 1 to 3 (energetics and Gibbs energy, rate and equilibrium, acids, redox and cells). Fifteen Paper 1A-style multiple-choice questions are followed by two Paper 2-style structured questions: the combustion of ethanol by three routes, and a weak-acid titration that runs into Le Châtelier and redox. It targets the usual mark losses: mixing kJ and J in Gibbs energy, forgetting to square in K, limiting reactants and oxidation states.

IB Chemistry exam tips

  • Show the equation, the substitution and then the rounded answer with its unit. IB awards the method mark even when the arithmetic slips, but a bare number earns nothing if it is wrong.
  • Watch signs and states: combustion is exothermic, forming bonds releases energy, and the enthalpy of formation of water differs by 44 kJ per mole between liquid and gas. Write state symbols in every thermochemical equation.
  • Match your answer to the command term. "State" wants one fact; "explain" wants the cause (for example "because the number of moles of gas decreases"); "deduce" wants the reasoning chain written out, not just the end point.
  • Use the 2023 data booklet values: molar volume 22.7 cubic decimetres per mole at STP (273 K and 100 kPa), not 22.4; average bond enthalpies; and relative atomic masses to one decimal place.

Frequently asked questions

Is this IB Chemistry practice exam really free?

Yes. The full exam and the print-ready PDF are free with no signup. The worked answer key is free too: enter your email on the page and we email you the answer-key PDF and unlock the solutions on screen. ExamTeX makes money from its exam generator, which turns your own class notes into practice exams like this one.

How closely does this match the real IB Chemistry exam?

As of 2026 (the 2023 syllabus, first examined in 2025), SL Paper 1 is 90 minutes: Paper 1A has 30 multiple-choice questions and Paper 1B has data-based questions; SL Paper 2 is 90 minutes of structured questions worth 50 marks. HL has 40 multiple-choice questions in a 2-hour Paper 1 and a 2.5-hour Paper 2. A calculator and the data booklet are allowed on every paper. This set uses the same question styles at roughly a third of the length and stays on the core content shared by SL and HL, except the Gibbs energy and entropy questions and the enthalpy-of-formation calculation, which are HL-only content.

Does the PDF include the answer key?

There are two PDFs: a clean exam paper for sitting under timed conditions, and an answer-key PDF with full worked solutions that we email to you.

Can I generate more IB Chemistry practice exams like this?

Yes. Upload your own notes, slides or a past paper to ExamTeX and it generates a print-ready practice exam in the same format in about a minute, with an answer key. The free tier includes 2 exams a month.

Can teachers use this exam in class?

Yes. The PDF is print-ready (A4, standard exam layout) and you are welcome to photocopy it for classroom use. Attribution is appreciated but not required.
