This free IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation SL practice exam follows the Paper 1 format: ten short-response questions, every one solvable with a graphic display calculator, across all five syllabus topics. It covers the questions AI students most often drop marks on — TVM loan repayments, percentage error, the cosine rule, Voronoi vertices, the chi-square test of independence, normal-distribution quantiles and the trapezoidal rule — and every solution is written as a markscheme, showing the method and accuracy marks. 9. Question 910 marks · Correlation, regression & chi-square test
A teacher records the number of hours, xx, that each of eight students spent revising for a test, and their scores, yy, out of 100. The teacher then surveys 150 students across the school about their main revision method and whether they passed the test. 10. Question 1010 marks · Calculus: turning points & trapezoidal rule
A garden designer models the width of a flower bed. One edge of the bed is a straight path along the x-axis, and the other edge follows the curve y=w(x)y = w(x), where w(x)=0.1x3−0.9x2+2.4xw(x) = 0.1x^3 - 0.9x^2 + 2.4x for 0≤x≤50 \leq x \leq 5, with xx and w(x)w(x) in metres. The bed ends with a straight edge at x=5x = 5.
    w(x)=0.1x3−0.9x2+2.4x,0≤x≤5w(x) = 0.1x^3 - 0.9x^2 + 2.4x, \qquad 0 \leq x \leq 5
    (a)

    [3]
    (d)
Use your GDC to find the actual area of the bed, and state whether the trapezoidal rule gives an underestimate or an overestimate.

IB Mathematics AI SL exam tips

  • Three significant figures unless the question says otherwise. Keep full calculator accuracy until the final line — rounding 1.0035 to 1.00 or using 63 m instead of 63.4 m in a later part costs the accuracy mark twice.
  • Write the calculator inputs you used ("N = 60, I% = 4.2, PV = -8000, PMT = 0, P/Y = C/Y = 12") or the formula with numbers substituted. A bare answer earns the A mark only if correct; the working earns the M mark even if you mistype a number.
  • For statistical tests, the examiner wants the hypothesis in words ("revision method and passing are independent"), the p-value to three significant figures, and a conclusion that compares p with the significance level in context. Missing any one of the three loses a mark.
  • Budget the 90 minutes at roughly a mark a minute: 50 minutes for the eight short questions, 30 for the two long ones, and 10 to check units, rounding and that every "show that" answer actually reaches the printed value.
