Make a mock exam from your notes
Last updated:
School mocks come once, usually in November or January, and the paper is whatever the department set. ExamTeX lets you sit as many mocks as you like before then: upload your notes, revision guide or the specification, choose the exam-board style, and get a printable paper with a mark scheme. It is a mock you can mark yourself, on the topics you are worried about.
Short answer
How can I make my own mock exam?
Upload your class notes, revision guide or the specification pages at examtex.com/create, pick the A-Level or IB style if your course has one (A-Level Maths or Economics; IB Maths AA or AI, IB Economics), set the question mix and time limit, and generate. ExamTeX writes new exam-style questions from your material and returns a printable mock with a mark scheme, in about a minute. For GCSE and other courses, leave the style off and name the board in the instructions.
How it works
1. Upload what you revise from
Class notes, a revision guide, the specification, or past papers from your board. Up to 20 files in one exam, so a topic’s notes plus the matching past-paper questions is one upload.
2. Set it up like the real paper
Choose the question mix and the time limit. For A-Level Maths or Economics and IB Maths or Economics, pick the style so questions use the board’s command words and mark conventions. For other subjects, write the board and paper in the special instructions.
3. Sit it under exam conditions, then mark it
Print it, sit it timed, no notes. Mark it with the answer key. Mocks are for finding out what you would have lost marks on while there is still time to fix it.
What to know
When to sit a practice mock
Two to three weeks before the school mock, then again a few days before, on the topics the first one exposed. In the final weeks before the real exams, one timed mock a week per subject is a common pattern.
Exam-board styles
A-Level Maths, A-Level Economics, IB Mathematics AA and AI, and IB Economics are presets: questions follow the board’s command words, mark allocations and structure. Boards within A-Level (AQA, Edexcel, OCR) share the same content; name yours in the instructions and set the question mix to mirror its paper.
Mark scheme included
Every mock comes with a mark scheme: the correct option and a short reason for multiple choice, and worked solutions for calculation and written questions. Switch it off for a copy to hand to someone else.
For teachers setting mocks
Teachers can generate a draft paper from the unit’s resources, edit it question by question, set the school and date in the header, and print it with the mark scheme. The free plan includes 2 exams a month; Pro removes the watermark.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a generated mock as good as a past paper?
Past papers are the gold standard and you should sit every one you can get. A generated mock adds what past papers cannot: new questions on exactly the topics you choose, in the same style, when you have run out of past papers or want to test one unit.
Does it do GCSE?
Yes, from your own notes and revision guides, without a GCSE-specific style preset. Write “AQA GCSE Biology Paper 1 style” (or your board and paper) in the special instructions and set the question mix to match.
Can I get a mark scheme?
Yes. The answer key at the end of the PDF is the mark scheme: correct answers with reasons, and worked solutions for longer questions.
Can I share a mock with friends in my class?
Yes. Each exam has a share link your classmates can open to read the paper, download the PDF and check the mark scheme. Each classmate who creates a free account from your link gives you an extra free exam.
Is it free?
You can try it free, without a card. The free plan includes 2 practice exams a month, with a watermark on the PDF, and generating from the built-in sample notes does not use one of them. Pro costs €9.99 a month for unlimited practice exams without the watermark; the Exam Pass gives you the same for 30 days for a one-time €9.99 and does not renew.
