Turn a YouTube video into a practice exam
Last updated:
Watching a lecture or review video is easy to mistake for studying it. ExamTeX turns a YouTube video into a practice exam you sit afterwards: paste the link, and the AI works through the video’s audio and what is shown on screen to write the questions.
Short answer
How do I turn a YouTube video into a practice exam?
At examtex.com/create, open “add a YouTube video” under the upload box, paste the link to a public video of up to 2 hours, and generate. ExamTeX processes the video’s audio and on-screen content, writes exam questions on it, and returns a LaTeX-typeset exam you can edit and download as a PDF, with an optional answer key. Longer videos take a few minutes, and the video’s length counts toward your monthly lecture audio allowance (2 hours on the free plan, 20 hours on Pro).
How it works
1. Paste the link
Under the upload box, open “or record a lecture · add a YouTube video”, paste the URL and press Add video. youtube.com/watch, youtu.be and Shorts links all work.
2. Choose the format
Keep the recommended question mix or set your own types and difficulty. Add your notes or slides to the same exam to tie the questions to your course.
3. Edit, download, sit it
Review the questions in the editor and download the typeset PDF. Tick Include Answer Key to add the answers and worked solutions on separate pages at the end.
What to know
Public videos, up to 2 hours
Only public videos can be used; unlisted and private videos are not supported, and live streams can be used once they have ended. Each video can be up to 2 hours long.
On-screen content counts
The AI receives the audio plus one frame every five seconds, so formulas and slides shown in the video can inform the questions, not only what is said.
No captions needed
The video itself is processed, so it works whether or not the video has captions or a transcript.
Counts toward your audio allowance
Video length is metered like lecture audio: 2 hours a month on the free plan, 20 hours a month on Pro or with the Exam Pass.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which YouTube links work?
Links to public videos in the usual forms: youtube.com/watch?v=…, youtu.be/…, YouTube Shorts, and finished live streams. Unlisted and private videos, and streams that are still live, are not supported.
Is there a length limit?
Yes: 2 hours per video. The length also counts toward your monthly lecture audio allowance, which is 2 hours on the free plan and 20 hours on Pro (€9.99 a month) or with the Exam Pass (€9.99 once, for 30 days).
Can I add several videos to one exam?
Yes. Each video is a separate source, and you can mix videos with notes, slides or pasted text, up to 20 sources per exam. The combined length of the videos counts toward your allowance.
What kinds of videos work best?
Videos that teach: lectures, worked-example tutorials and exam review videos. Videos with little spoken or on-screen subject content give the AI little to write questions about.
Is it free?
You can try it free, without a card. The free plan includes 2 practice exams a month, with a watermark on the PDF, and generating from the built-in sample notes does not use one of them. Pro costs €9.99 a month for unlimited practice exams without the watermark; the Exam Pass gives you the same for 30 days for a one-time €9.99 and does not renew.
