How do I turn my AP Macro notes into a practice test?
Last updated:
The AP Macroeconomics exam is 60 multiple-choice questions in 70 minutes, then three free-response questions in 60 minutes: two thirds and one third of the score. Released FRQs are public, but the multiple choice is not, and neither targets the unit you have just finished. ExamTeX writes a new test from your class notes or the six College Board units, with an answer key that explains the right option and lists the graph labels and statements each FRQ point requires.
Short answer
How can I make an AP Macroeconomics practice test from my notes?
Upload your AP Macro notes or slides at examtex.com/create, or pick AP Macroeconomics and tick the units you are on, set the mix (for example 20 multiple-choice and 2 free-response questions) and the time limit, and generate. ExamTeX writes multiple-choice questions with five options and free-response questions that ask you to draw correctly labeled graphs, calculate and explain, each with an answer key. Print it, sit it timed, and mark it against the key.
How it works
1. Upload your notes or tick the units
Class notes, slides, a review packet, or the six units ticked (units 2 to 5 carry most of the exam weight). Up to 20 files in one test.
2. Set the mix like the exam
Multiple choice for Section I practice, free-response (short answer and graph analysis) for Section II. The AP Macroeconomics style gives multiple choice five options and asks for correctly labeled graphs where the exam would.
3. Sit it timed, then mark it
About 70 seconds per multiple-choice question; 25 minutes for the long FRQ and about 12 for each short one. Mark with the key and write down each graph label you missed.
What to know
What the answer key gives you
For multiple choice, the correct option and why the distractors are wrong. For free response, the points as a reader would award them: the correctly labeled graph (axes, curves, equilibrium, the shift with its direction), the numerical answer with work, and the explanation sentence.
Unit weighting
College Board weights the units: unit 1 (5 to 10 percent), unit 2 (12 to 17), unit 3 (17 to 27), unit 4 (18 to 23), unit 5 (20 to 30), unit 6 (10 to 13). Tick the units you are on for a unit test, or all six for a mock.
Graphs
The answer key describes the expected graph (labels, shifts, areas) so you can grade your own drawing. Draw it as the FRQ asks: price level on the vertical axis for AD-AS, the nominal interest rate for the money market, the real interest rate for loanable funds.
The paper you are practising for
Section I: multiple choice
60 questions with five options each, covering all six units. No calculator.
Section II: free response
One long question (10 points) and two short questions (5 points each). Draw correctly labeled graphs, calculate, identify and explain. Includes a 10-minute reading period.
Task verbs
Draw a correctly labeled graph (the labels earn the points), Show (indicate on the graph), Calculate (show work), Identify (one word or phrase), Explain (a because-sentence that links cause to effect).
Common mistakes
- Drawing LRAS as a curve or leaving it out, so the output gap cannot be shown relative to full-employment output.
- Putting the real interest rate on the money market graph; it takes the nominal rate, and the loanable funds market takes the real rate.
- Using the spending multiplier for a tax change; the tax multiplier is smaller and negative.
- Writing "AD shifts right" without the because-chain the Explain verb requires.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the multiple choice have five options like the real exam?
Yes. The AP Macroeconomics style sets five-option multiple choice, up to 35 multiple-choice questions per test, so a full 60-question Section I is two tests.
Can I get a test on one unit only?
Yes. Tick the unit in "Pick your exam" and the questions are written from that unit's outline, or upload only that unit's notes. The free unit 2 and unit 3 practice tests are examples.
Does it write FRQs with graphs?
Yes. Graph-analysis questions ask you to draw and label a graph (AD-AS, money market, loanable funds, Phillips curve, foreign exchange) and the key describes the correct graph. The PDF leaves answer space for your drawing.
Is this enough preparation on its own?
Use it with the released FRQs from College Board, which show the exact phrasing readers score. Generated tests add what those lack: multiple choice on your units and fresh questions when you have used the released ones.
Is it free?
You can try it free, without a card. The free plan includes 2 practice exams a month, with a watermark on the PDF, and generating from the built-in sample notes does not use one of them. Pro costs €9.99 a month for unlimited practice exams without the watermark; the Exam Pass gives you the same for 30 days for a one-time €4.99 (exam-season price until 15 December; normally €9.99) and does not renew.
