Turn handwritten notes into a practice exam

Last updated:

Handwritten notes are often the most complete record of a course, and the hardest to test yourself on. ExamTeX reads photos of your pages, including equations and diagrams, and writes a practice exam on them: a typeset paper to print and sit, with worked solutions to mark it against.

Short answer

How do I turn handwritten notes into a practice exam?

Take a clear photo of each page and upload the photos (JPG, PNG or WebP) at examtex.com/create, or upload a scanned PDF. ExamTeX reads the handwriting, equations and diagrams, writes exam questions on that material, and returns a LaTeX-typeset exam you can edit and download as a PDF, with an optional answer key. Generation usually takes about a minute.

How it works

1. Photograph the pages

One page per photo, flat, well lit and in focus. Upload JPG, PNG or WebP files; HEIC files are not accepted, so convert those to JPG first. A scanned PDF also works.

2. Choose the format

Keep the recommended question mix or set your own types and difficulty. Photos can be combined with typed notes, slides or pasted text in the same exam.

3. Check, then print

Handwriting can be misread, so skim the questions in the editor and fix anything that came out wrong. Then download the PDF, with Include Answer Key ticked if you want worked solutions at the end.

What to know

Photos are read as images

Photos go to the AI as images rather than through a separate text-extraction step, so it reads equations, labelled diagrams and graphs as well as words. Where writing is hard to read, it makes its best interpretation.

Photos or a scanned PDF?

A scanned PDF with no selectable text is run through text recognition (OCR) first, which captures the words but not the diagrams. If your notes rely on diagrams, upload photos instead.

Check before you print

Faint, cramped or crossed-out writing is more likely to be misread. The editor lets you reword, re-point or delete any question before the PDF is compiled.

Printed as a real exam

The exam itself is typeset in LaTeX, with numbered questions, points per question and proper maths notation, so it reads like a real paper.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can ExamTeX read my handwriting?

It sends photos of your pages to an AI model that reads handwriting, equations and diagrams. Neat, dark writing photographed straight on works best; faint, cramped or heavily crossed-out writing is more likely to be misread, so check the questions before you print.

Which image formats are supported?

JPG, PNG and WebP images, plus scanned PDFs. HEIC files are not accepted, so convert them to JPG before uploading.

Does it work for handwritten maths?

Yes. The AI is instructed to read equations in the images, and the exam it produces is typeset in LaTeX, so the questions and worked solutions print with proper notation.

Can I mix photos with typed notes or slides?

Yes. One exam can use up to 20 sources in any mix: photos, PDFs, Word files, PowerPoint slides and pasted text. The questions draw on all of them.

Is it free?

You can try it free, without a card. The free plan includes 2 practice exams a month, with a watermark on the PDF, and generating from the built-in sample notes does not use one of them. Pro costs €9.99 a month for unlimited practice exams without the watermark; the Exam Pass gives you the same for 30 days for a one-time €9.99 and does not renew.
