Turn a textbook chapter into a practice exam
Last updated:
End-of-chapter exercises run out, and their answers are often printed in the back of the book. ExamTeX writes a fresh exam from the chapter itself: upload the pages, set the question mix and difficulty, and get a LaTeX-typeset paper you can print and sit, with worked solutions to mark it against afterwards.
Short answer
How do I turn a textbook chapter into a practice exam?
Upload the chapter as a PDF, or as photos of the pages, at examtex.com/create, choose the question types and difficulty, and generate. ExamTeX writes new questions on the chapter’s content rather than copying its exercises, and returns a LaTeX-typeset exam you can edit and download as a PDF, with an optional answer key. Generation usually takes about a minute.
How it works
1. Upload the chapter
A PDF with selectable text works best. Scanned pages are run through text recognition (OCR), and photos of pages (JPG, PNG or WebP) are read directly. Upload the chapters you are studying, not the whole book.
2. Choose the format
Pick the question mix and difficulty. Add a special instruction such as “focus on sections 4.2–4.4” to narrow it down, or choose an IB, AP or A-Level exam style if the book follows one.
3. Print, sit, mark
Download the typeset PDF and sit it closed-book. Tick Include Answer Key when you are ready to mark: the answers and worked solutions print on separate pages at the end.
What to know
One chapter at a time works best
Very long text is cut off at a length limit, so a whole textbook would not be covered evenly. Upload one to a few chapters per exam and generate a new exam as you work through the book.
Worked solutions, not just answers
Each question comes with a worked solution, so when you mark the exam you can see which step of a method went wrong, not only whether the final answer was right.
Exam-board styles
For IB Maths, IB Economics, AP Calculus, AP Statistics, AP Micro- and Macroeconomics, A-Level Maths and A-Level Economics, pick the matching exam style and the questions follow that board’s command terms and mark conventions.
Notation prints properly
Exams compile through LaTeX, so fractions, integrals, matrices and Greek letters in the questions and solutions print the way a textbook prints them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will it just copy the end-of-chapter questions?
No. The generator is instructed not to copy questions, problems or worked examples from the uploaded material. It writes new questions on the same concepts, so the book’s own exercises stay useful as separate practice.
Can I use a scanned or photographed chapter?
Yes. A scanned PDF with no selectable text is run through text recognition (OCR) before the questions are written, and photos of pages (JPG, PNG or WebP) are read directly by the AI, including equations and diagrams. Flat, well-lit, in-focus pages give the best results.
How much can I upload at once?
Up to 20 files per exam and 100 MB per file. Keep it to the chapters you are studying: very long text is cut off at a length limit, so one to a few chapters per exam gives more even coverage than a full textbook.
Does it work for maths and science textbooks?
Yes. Calculation and graph-analysis questions are available alongside multiple choice, short answer and essay, and everything is typeset in LaTeX, so equations in the questions and worked solutions print cleanly.
Is it free?
You can try it free, without a card. The free plan includes 2 practice exams a month, with a watermark on the PDF, and generating from the built-in sample notes does not use one of them. Pro costs €9.99 a month for unlimited practice exams without the watermark; the Exam Pass gives you the same for 30 days for a one-time €9.99 and does not renew.
