Turn a study guide into a practice exam
Last updated:
A study guide tells you what to know. It does not tell you whether you know it. ExamTeX turns a study guide, review sheet or exam outline into a practice exam across its topics, so reading the guide becomes a test you can fail safely, a week before the one you cannot.
Short answer
How do I make a practice test from a study guide?
Upload the study guide (PDF, Word, slides or a photo) at examtex.com/create, or paste its text, then choose the question types and difficulty and generate. ExamTeX writes exam questions covering the guide’s topics and returns a LaTeX-typeset practice exam you can print, with an answer key, in about a minute. Add your notes or slides to the same exam for questions that follow the course more closely.
How it works
1. Add the study guide
Upload it, or choose Paste text and paste the review sheet. A study guide that is mostly a topic list works like a syllabus; one with definitions, formulas and worked examples gives richer questions.
2. Match the real exam
Set the same question mix and length as the exam you are preparing for, and the exam-board style if there is one. Set a time limit so the PDF shows it.
3. Sit it timed, mark it, fix the gaps
Print it and sit it under time with the guide closed. Mark it with the answer key. The questions you lose marks on point at the sections of the guide to go back to.
What to know
Why testing beats re-reading the guide
Re-reading a study guide feels productive because the material looks familiar. Retrieval practice, answering questions without the guide open, is what the research on learning consistently finds moves marks. A practice exam is retrieval practice in the exam’s own format.
Teacher-made guides and your own
A review sheet handed out by the teacher is the best possible source, since it reflects what they think matters. Your own guide works too, and combining it with the slides it was written from gives questions that use the course’s notation and examples.
More than one exam from one guide
A long guide will not be covered by a single 20-question exam. Generate one exam per section with a special instruction such as “unit 2 only”, or generate the same guide twice at different difficulties.
Frequently Asked Questions
My study guide is a list of terms. Will that work?
Yes. A list of terms or topics is treated like a syllabus: questions are written from the topics using general subject knowledge. For questions that use your course’s own examples, add the slides or notes the guide summarises.
Can I make the practice exam the same length as the real one?
Yes. Set the number of questions of each type to match, up to 35 multiple choice and 8 written questions, and set the time limit so it prints on the paper.
Does it work for university courses, not just school exams?
Yes. Any course works. IB, AP and A-Level styles are presets; for a university course leave the style off and the questions follow the material.
Can I share the practice exam with my study group?
Yes. Every exam has a share link. Classmates can read the questions, download the PDF and reveal the answers, and each one who creates a free account from your link gives you an extra free exam.
Is it free?
You can try it free, without a card. The free plan includes 2 practice exams a month, with a watermark on the PDF, and generating from the built-in sample notes does not use one of them. Pro costs €9.99 a month for unlimited practice exams without the watermark; the Exam Pass gives you the same for 30 days for a one-time €9.99 and does not renew.
